LightPOP: Add a Pop-up on Your WordPress Blog without Editing Any Files

March 6th, 2010 by Contributing Editor Leave a reply »

LightPOP WordPress plugin aims to take care and ease the time consuming process of configuring pop-ups on a WordPress blog. It does so by providing a quick, simple interface to display what you want on a pop-up. Does this plugin do what you want, though? Come and read the rest of the article to find out.

Ease of Use and Installation

Simply upload the plugin’s folder and activate it on your dashboard, and it should be ready to go. No other complicated steps involved.

Here is the plugin’s option page (click on the image to view the bigger version):

Every option seems to be clearly labeled and well-explained. I wish it has a “Reset to Default” option next to the “Save” button, but to be fair this is a feature often missing from other plugins as well.

Support and Documentation

There is no mention for how the plugin is supported on the plugin’s home page, but further digging shows that this Support page exists. Basically:

  • Technical support is free
  • It’s available in period of 6 months after plugin purchase
  • You will get response in 1-2 business days, and resolution to your problem within 1-2 weeks

For more details, you can go read the Support page.

Aside from the video and written tutorials on the plugin’s landing page, there doesn’t seem to be any available documentation. Considering it to be a rather simple plugin, a full-blown documentation might not be necessary. If you come across any problem, then the plugin’s Support is your best (and only) bet.

Opt-in e-mail List Support and Compatibility

There is no specific opt-in e-mail list support. As you can see from the plugin’s options page above, it asks you to write the HTML content on your own.

Custom Pop-up Contents

This is all the plugin supports. Unfortunately there is no WYSIWYG editor, you are only given a plain textbox to write your own HTML content. As the video suggests, you are expected to use other application like Dreamweaver to edit your contents (or you can also use WordPress’ built-in Visual Editor).

Types of Pop-up

You can create either an entry pop-up or a delayed pop-up. Additionally, you can also set the frequency of your pop-up, whether to show it just one time only, once in a day, or after every certain minutes pass.

Stylability and Placements

You can style the following aspects of the pop-up:

  • Width
  • Height
  • Background color
  • Border thickness
  • Border color

How it Deals with Pop-up Blockers

There is no mention of how the plugin deals with pop-up blockers, but I’ve tested it with most major browsers with built-in blocker (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera) and the pop-up still manage to show up.

Pricing and Licensing

The plugin comes with a US$ 97 price tag. It’s an unlimited domain license, meaning that you can use it anywhere you want.

Return Policy

There is no mention for any return policy whatsoever, so assume there isn’t any.

Missing Features

  • Opt-in e-mail List Support and Compatibility
  • Multimedia Support
  • Design Templates
  • Lightbox and other Effects
