WF Review: No-Nonsense, Solid Product Review Plugin

February 12th, 2010 by Contributing Editor Leave a reply »

WFReview PluginWF Review is a great plugin to create a review site of different products. Its strength lies in its uncomplicated approach to setting up a review site with easy to understand settings while remaining powerful under the hood.

If you have been waiting for an easy solution to create your product review site then WF Review could be a good choice.

Ease of Use and Installation

Before you proceed towards installing, you need to ensure your webhost supports IonCube Loader. If it does not, ask them to install it for you. Otherwise, you will need to change your web host. This can prove to be letdown for some users.

If your hosting meets the requirements then installation becomes easier. Just download the zip file, upload it to your wp-content/plugins/ directory just like any other WordPress plugin, and activate it.

Make sure you are getting the correct licensed file from your members panel otherwise you may run into errors stating invalid license.

Regarding usage, WF Review’s control panel is quite easy to understand and navigate with self-explanatory options. Though users who don’t have much experience with WordPress could find it intimidating. But the authors provide a video tutorials section to help with that.

Support and Documentation

WF Review is accompanied with a proper installation guide. But it lacks full text documentation of other tasks. Instead of text documentation, video tutorials are provided. But the problem is that most of those tutorials are outdated.

As for technical support, you can get it via the support forums or via Live Chat link in your members area.

Generating Comparison Tables

Unfortunately, the current version of WF Review does not support this feature. But according to their blog, v4.0 is due on the 20th of February and it will have this feature. And 4.0 will be a free upgrade for current members.

Stylability and Compatibility with Other Themes

WF Review can work with any theme as it supports autoembed of rating buttons and features. You can even place them according to your needs by turning off autoembed and editing the CSS and template files manually.

With the upcoming version 4.0, WF Review will ship with its own themes as well.

Enable User-Generated Reviews and Ratings

WF Review has a option of user generated reviews and ratings. It gives a average rating to the product through the user’s ratings.

CSV Import

WF Review has a pretty powerful post importer which can help you generate review posts directly with unique templates assigned. You can even schedule your imported posts and can sort them into particular categories/tags automatically. WF Review has a feature that can automatically look for updated posts to import from your files.

In fact, this is the only method to write review posts since you can’t write a review post directly from Admin Panel of WordPress which I find to be a very serious disadvantage to this plugin.

Google Maps

WF Review is integrated with Google Maps. Just key in your Maps API Key to get started and search for stores or listings depending on the nearest distance specified.

Post Sorting Options

WF Review also offers you the ability to sort the posts shown on the basis of highest or lowest rankings and by most rated.

Bayesian Weighting

WF Review also supports Bayesian type of weighting to determine a better accurate rating. Not very advanced but still supports it.

Dummy Comments Generation

WF Review also has a dummy comments generator and even asks whether to use all males or female commentors for your rating posts. You can give it a range of rating to specify automatically. Though the feature is named Generate Reviews instead of Generate Comments in options panel. Also it generates only dummy ratings but no comment text.

Affiliate Link Management

WF Review comes with a affiliate links manager which can help you turn keywords into links automatically. You also have the option of cloaking these links.

Pricing and Licensing

With so many features, the author made it obvious that it won’t come at a cheap price. Pricing structure is based on number of sites on which you intend to use the plugin. They also have a 3rd license for when you want to sell the site to somebody with the plugin. (They could have easily called it as a Reseller License :P ). Here is the complete pricing structure:

  • Single Site License ($89)
  • Multi Site License ($139)
  • Developer License ($289) – for selling your site

All Licenses offer free upgrades and support for lifetime.

Addons

Premium Placements Plugin

It comes with a premium addon which allows product owners to upgrade their listings to a featured listing or even add their own featured listing to be reviewed. Payment options supported are Paypal and Authorize.net. Addon costs $39 for Single Site License and $49 for a Multi Site License.

Refund Policy

I didn’t find any mention of Refund Policy on their site. But instead of a refund policy they offer a 7 day trial version. (Currently seems to work as a 15 day trial :) ) You can try the plugin without any strings attached for 7 (15) days without even giving any personal payment information. After the trial duration, the plugin will stop working.

Missing Features

Though the Plugin seems to work great with plethora of features, there are few things which I found missing from the plugin:

  • Generating Microformat HTML markup to be read by Google bot and other search engines
  • Custom Themes (coming in v4.0)
  • Comparison Table (coming in v4.0)
